What does it take to throw an awesome party? The ingredients for a successful party include a combination of food, music, venue, entertainment and of course, great people – but many people don’t realise that having a central idea or theme can be the starting point for the most memorable parties.
A theme is an instant way to break the ice at any celebration, birthday party or even a wedding, it gets people talking and mingling – and it helps people lose their inhibitions. Whether it’s a dinosaur delight party for a six-year old or a toga party for a sixty year old – a fancy dress themed party is always great fun.
Having a party theme is not only a good idea from a social perspective, it also provides a very practical and convenient framework for all the organisation of the event. From the party invitations to the thank-you notes, catering to the decor, party accessories and goody bags, all aspects of the party can be chosen in keeping with the theme. A theme will also take all the ‘what ifs’ out of the cake decorations as many specialist party supply shops and bakeries can produce cakes plus a host of other sweet treats in a huge variety of shapes, sizes and themes.
Following are a couple of tried and tested kids birthday party themes for different age groups, but check out the websites of party supply shops as there are literally hundreds of options to choose from whether it’s a 1st birthday or a 21st.
Children between the ages of 1 and 6
Standard party ideas include farm or jungle animals, fairies, princes and princesses, choo-choo trains, superheroes, pink and white polka dots, butterflies and bugs, firemen or soldiers, barbie or tinkerbell.
Kids aged six and older
Girls are generally to play ‘dress-up’ for longer than boys, so it may be an idea to have a themed party for older boys that doesn’t involve fancy dress. ’Girly’ themes such as pink polka dots, Hollywood etc work really well for girls (as do pyjama parties) whilst action themes are perfect for boys, eg armies, superheroes etc.
Grown-ups
An adult fancy-dress theme will make certain that your party fires up, not fizzles out. From vintage themes (eg rock ‘n roll, the 60s or 70s), movie themes (eg Grease or the Great Gatsby) to simple colour schemes eg black and white, all-pink etc – a party theme is guaranteed to get things going . Some other great party ideas are tuxedoes and tramps, vicars and vixens, Hawaiian, Arabian nights, togas, sporting greats and denim and diamonds.
Another party idea is to base the theme on a country eg Best of British, Stars and Stripes or a ‘G’day mate (Australia).
Whatever theme you choose, you’re guaranteed to find a huge array of accessories and decorations to support it. From fancy costumes to stunning serviettes, trendy table runners to cool cups and cutlery, party piñatas to branded balloons, glam goodie bags and giveaways to desirable decor, the party supply shops will have everything it takes to transform an ordinary event into something extraordinary.
